March 9 - 13, 2026
São José dos Campos (INPE) - Brazil
The SouthPol collaboration aims to produce an optical polarimetric survey of the Southern Sky. To achieve this goal, the SouthPol team is designing and building a high-precision polarimeter that will be installed on the recently acquired 1-meter telescope, which will be located at the Pico dos Dias Observatory, managed by LNA.
The SouthPol survey will provide Astrophysics with a unique and highly valuable database. One of the main scientific cases is to study the magnetic field that permeates our galaxy, the Milky Way, and the Magellanic Clouds. Additionally, the results will have an immediate impact on several areas, such as Cosmology, Extragalactic Astronomy, the Interstellar Medium of the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds, Star Formation, Stellar Envelopes, stellar explosions (GRBs, novae, and supernovae), and the Solar System, among others.
The II SouthPol Workshop aims to bring together the project team to discuss the science projects, the technical development, and the management of the entire project. Researchers interested in the SouthPol project are wellcome to participate in the science discussion, which are planned to occur in the first three days of the workshop.
This partnership involves researchers from:
National Laboratory for Astrophysics - Brazil;
the Department of Astronomy at IAG/USP - Brazil;
the Astrophysics Division at INPE - Brazil;
UFMG - Brazil;
the Department of Astrophysics at Radboud University - the Netherlands;
the Hiroshima Astrophysical Science Center and Hiroshima University - Japan;
Mitsubishi Foundation and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tokyo - Japan;
Universidade Chalmers University of Technology - Sweden .
The last two days of the II SouthPol Workshop are restricted for SouthPol Team only. The program for the first three days can be found here.
The registration fee for the in-person participants is:
R$ 70 - Undergraduate and graduate students;
Other categories:
R$ 200;

The São José dos Campos (SJC) Bus Station serves buses from many cities across Brazil. Specifically, the Pássaro Marron bus company operates routes connecting the SJC Bus Station to the Tietê Bus Terminal in São Paulo city and to Guarulhos Airport.
For air travel, we suggest flying into Guarulhos Airport, from which regular buses depart for the SJC Bus Station. Schedules are available on the Pássaro Marron website, where tickets can also be purchased.
Participants are permitted to drive their vehicles onto the INPE campus. There are numerous parking spots available, and parking is free of charge.
